Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Temple Located?

The Satanic Temple Headquarters, also known as The Salem Art Gallery in Salem, MA, is open to the public.

This historic building was once a mortuary and it now houses TST’s Baphomet statue, Veterans’ Memorial monument, an art gallery, and a library dedicated to the study of moral panics.

Currently, local Congregations of The Satanic Temple do not have physical locations.

Does TST offer any public “services” (i.e.- Church, sermons, weddings)?

The Satanic Temple does not proselytize to the public. Modern Satanism is an individual path, one that is religious and atheistic in nature, that demands study of the practitioner and requires independent thought. Worship is antithetical to Satanism and we worship no beings, save ourselves. It is the position of The Satanic Temple that non-believers should embrace religion while fighting superstition.

The Satanic Temple does have a Ministry program. TST’s Ministers of Satan are individuals who have committed to upholding Satanic ideals and providing care and leadership for our community. Ministers of Satan are recognized by the state and are vested with full clerical powers, and may perform legally recognized rituals such as weddings, funerals, memorial services, and all other services that are traditionally available to clergy. If you would like a Minister of Satan at your wedding or funeral, or are interested in other services such as a private Unbaptism, please use the contact form on the website to reach out to us.

TST Arizona also hosts public & private events that often include ritual under the direction of our Ministers.

“Contrary to popular belief, there doesn’t have to be an associate with a deity or religion — ritual is just a mindful, symbolic activity performed to create a particular result.” – Shiva Honey

Is TST a religion or an activist group?

As a religious organization, TST serves the religious needs of our members. Satanism is our religion and the organization by which we express our Satanic ideals is The Satanic Temple.

We are a religious organization with a strong focus on activism. As our co-founder, Lucien Greaves, best put it, “Never separate art and activism. Never let your activism be artless, and never allow your art to be orthodox.”

Our identification as Satanists isn’t “satirical,” however, we’re not adverse to using humor and satire to highlight various hypocrisies and absurdities we run up against. This point is entirely lost on some people who seem to believe that everything is mutually exclusive, and one organization can’t be more than one thing at a time. – Lucien Greaves

Quote from “Never Let Your Activism Be Artless”, HauteMacabre

TST is not a catch all for every cause. While you might have a very worthwhile cause, if it does not promote or advance our specific goals, you will not find traction here. We encourage individuals passionate about causes not aligned with TST’s existing work to pursue them elsewhere. To find further clarification on TST’s mission, please refer to TST’s national FAQ and campaigns.

“We are a religious group that engages in activism when public policy is seen to inhibit our practice or otherwise diminish our ability for equal civic engagement. We are not an activist group waving the banner of religion as an afterthought. We are Satanists first.” – Lucien Greaves

TST AZ, as are all other Congregations under The Satanic Temple, is a grassroots movement comprised of volunteers. TST AZ welcomes Satanists who support The Satanic Temple’s mission and who believe in our Seven Tenets.

Non-Satanists, also endearingly referred to as “Satan Adjacent”, who join TST for their interest in activism, are welcome to support our endeavors and join our discussion forums. We welcome constructive questions and discussion on the topic to help enlighten those who wish to learn more.

Where does TST AZ meet?

Currently, TST Congregations do not have physical locations. TST AZ members and allies choose to meet in public places like coffee shops, restaurants, and other public spaces where members and allies can enjoy each other’s company, discuss Satanism, and host events.

The bulk of TST AZ events are located in Tucson and Phoenix or online. We are always looking for local volunteers to help coordinate with sympathetic businesses in their area in hopes to find a friendly venue to host one of our events or donation dropboxes. Any assistance we get from the public in this endeavor is highly appreciated.

We invite our friends and allies to subscribe to the occasional TST AZ Newsletter here and to join TST AZ’s Facebook discussion forum where most of our unofficial gatherings are hosted by community members.

I’ve done my homework and want to get involved with TST AZ. What’s next?

Official membership to The Satanic Temple Arizona Congregation takes time and effort on behalf of the interested applicant. Sufficient time is needed for the applicant to get to know TST AZ (and vice versa), to ensure that both parties have a mutually reciprocal working dynamic, common goals, and demonstrate understanding of the mission of TST.

TST AZ Official Membership is extended only to those that have shown consistent participation and passed an initial vetting process by TST AZ’s Council. A few things you can do if you are interested in Official Membership:

  • Introduce yourself and make an effort to meet the members of our tight-knit community online and in person.

  • Be vocal with TST AZ’s Council that you are interested in Official Membership.

  • Participate productively in TST AZ’s Facebook discussion forum.

  • Participate in specific campaigns.

  • Display knowledge of Satanism.

  • Volunteer time and offer any skills that may prove beneficial for the chapter.

I am not a Satanist, but I support what you do. Can I still become an official Congregation member?

Official Congregation membership is reserved for Satanists. However, we have a lot of friends and allies that are not formal members but are part of our community.

Even as the influence and popularity of The Satanic Temple grows due to our activism, the purpose of TST remains the same: a religious organization for Satanists.

I am too far away to attend your events but still wish to join TST AZ.

As previously mentioned, TST AZ in-person events occur mostly between Tucson and Phoenix. We do, however, host regular online events to provide opportunities for participation from the entire state. Joining our discussion forum is the best way to keep up with opportunities to participate.

New to Satanism and/or the Left Hand Path?

Knowledge is the greatest gift and we encourage all to attain this through self-motivated study, as we are not a school or university. We love to learn and share our knowledge with each other, but we are not here to teach you about Satanism. TST generously shares knowledge, resources, and original content through our sites and social media. We don’t expect you to be an expert, but we do assume you are self-motivated when it comes to learning. The more obvious it is that you are putting in effort to learn, the more likely it is that people will be willing to help you learn more. If you are not sure where to start, check out the following reading lists: The Satanic Temple Library

Many Satanists first began with the Satanic Bible, written by the Church of Satan’s founder Anton LaVey. The Satanic Temple is not affiliated in any way with the Church of Satan. Although the Satanic Bible is a good start, we recommend these works as well.

One does not need membership to a Satanic organization to claim the title of “Satanist”, as it is a philosophy that resonates with those that practice it in their daily lives.

Coming from a Western LHP, esoteric, or initiatory inclination?

As Satanists we embrace our outsider status and take pride in our heterodox views, perceptions, and positive assertion of our values. As a 21st century emergence our lineage is rich and complex, with Classical, Enlightenment, Modernist, and Postmodern influences. Esotericism and occultism are in the mix; however, our Satanism is derived from the Miltonic-Romantic and French Decadent literary traditions, and is thus primarily political, intellectual, and artistic at its core. Our community supports a diverse range of interests, and each member is encouraged to develop their personal practice/path.

Are there any age restrictions to joining TST AZ?

TST AZ does not accept individuals under 18 years old under any conditions. Most TST AZ events are also 21+, which may hinder anyone younger than that from participating in certain activities. Parents are also discouraged from indoctrinating their children into Satanism. Parental imposition of religious beliefs is indoctrination, regardless if it is Satanism, and should be left up to the individual when that person is cognizant enough to understand.

What does it cost to join?

There is no membership fee to join TST AZ.

Will TST AZ or SATAN grant me fame, riches, and/or a path to the Illuminati? Will TST help me sell my soul?

No. No. No. And again NO. Please look elsewhere.

Conspiracy theories such as the Illuminati and QAnon have no real ties to Satanism. The Satanic Temple works hard to debunk conspiracy theories, those often associated with the Satanic Panic of the 80’s and 90’s. Please visit Grey Faction to learn more.

The belief of a soul requires a belief in the supernatural, let alone a belief in a literal Satan to sell one’s soul to – both of which are antithetical to the fundamental values of The Satanic Temple.
