"She Who Can Heal, Can Destroy: Witch Hunts and the Oppression of Women"
The control of women in social and religious spheres has been occurring for millennia. While women in some ancient cultures enjoyed power as healers, oracles, deities, and priestesses, the overall participation of women in religious spheres has declined over time, and in some cases become outright heresy punishable by death. In this talk, we will examine the diminishing of women's historical roles in religion and magic, and how the European Inquisition acted as a gender-based genocide that helped keep power in the hands of both institutionalized religion and the newly forming academic and scientific communities.
