"The city is not going to deviate from its long standing practice of having the invocation given only by representatives from institutions that have a substantial connection to the Scottsdale community," said the city in a statement released Monday, May 23. "Therefore, we are making other arrangements for the invocation to be given on July 6."

The Satanic Temple member Stu De Haan of Tucson said the group originally got permission to speak at a meeting in April, but the city changed the date to July 6. Now, the city ultimately said no.

"Why did they put us on the calendar to begin with?" said Haan. "I'm starting to question whether they made that up or have some kind of pretext. We were actually approved, and discriminated against."
